Reality on the Ground
Life in rural Rwanda is shaped by daily challenges. Many families live without steady access to food, clean water, electricity, or reliable healthcare. Most survive through small-scale farming, but weather and unstable markets often mean there’s not enough to live on — let alone save or grow.
Children face added risks. In some communities, abuse and exploitation still occur, especially where poverty, isolation, and lack of awareness make it harder to protect the most vulnerable.
While Rwanda has laws and support systems in place, they’re not always accessible or consistently enforced in remote areas.
Access to basic needs remains uneven:
- Many families eat only once a day.
- Clean water is often far away.
- Electricity and healthcare are limited in villages.
- Schools are free, but costs for supplies still exclude the poorest.
- Sanitation is basic, and hygiene is difficult to maintain.
